The Tax Investigations Market: A review of 2009 and predictions for 2010
2009 has been a year of many challenges for industry, commerce and banking. This has impacted significantly on the accountancy and law firms of the UK in all fields of tax with the exception of Recovery, Insolvency and some niche areas of tax planning and products.
HMRC’s apparent softly-softly approach to the investigation of small and large businesses has also led to a degree of stagnation, with a number of firms overestimating the volume of work that would arise.
Some firms have enjoyed far greater return from the Offshore Disclosure Facility than others, with Partner feedback on the success of marketing campaigns also demonstrating vastly differing fortunes.
The good news:
2010 appears to offer hope that gradual recovery will turn into actual growth and an ever increasing number of accountancy practices and law firms are showing a new willingness to recruit Tax Investigations practitioners in late Q1/early Q2 of 2010 and beyond.
Early indications suggest that this recruitment focus will primarily target those of experienced Assistant Manager grade to Senior Manager/Director level in London, Manchester and Birmingham.
